Playing music can stimulate the production and creativity of pieces of art. Introduce students to a piece of classical music that has quiet, loud, fast, and slow components and allow them to listen to the piece once with their heads down. Advise them to relax and let their minds drift freely!
Materials:
Stereo system, piece of music, pencil crayons, and several pieces of paper.
Process:
1) Let the students listen to the music piece once through.
2) Give each student several pieces of blank paper and several colourful pencil crayon options.
3) Play the music again and ask students to represent the musical section using a coloured pencil.
4) When the music has a silence, or a change in volume or tempo, encourage students to switch to a new coloured pencil (after a few minutes let students guide their own colour changes).
5) Once the music has finished have the entire table group place their drawings in a way that represents the flow of the song.
Resources:
Musical pieces by Bizet, Mozart, Beethoven, or Bach would work for this art exercise.
